The Catholic Church's presence in Manistee dates back to missionaries in the 1600's.  Guardian Angels parish was founded in 1888; the church was completed in 1891 and towers over the Manistee skyline by day and night.  The 170-ft. spire, along with magnificent statuary, art and the stations of the cross, create an atmosphere of reverence and worship.

There are a number of distinctive features in the Guardian Angels Catholic Church which include: graphic art depicting scenes such as the Annunciation; a scene representing the traditional role of the Guardian Angels and the four Evangelists: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John; a carillon located in the steeple of the church, which is a chime of 12 massive bells, now fitted to be played manually, off a keyboard and electronically; and a turn-of-the-century pipe organ with 28 stops and 1600 pipes located in the choir loft.

The Nelson Guardian Angels Catholic Church Fund supports the ongoing cost of maintaining this historic church landmark, guaranteeing that the church’s beauty and craftsmanship will be preserved for generations to come.
