Manistee County Community Foundation

Launch Manistee Network

In addition to building a lasting source of community capital, and awarding grants and scholarships to improve quality of life, the Manistee County Community Foundation serves as a convenor and provides leadership to affect positive community change.

Recognizing the direct link between education and quality of life, MCCF has convened and coordinated the Launch Manistee Network as a community leadership initiative of the Foundation since 2012.

The Launch Manistee Network is Manistee County’s cradle-to-career education initiative designed to support students from early childhood through adulthood, and ultimately the economic prosperity of Manistee County. The Network was established with support from the Michigan College Access Network (MCAN) and continues to serve as one of MCAN’s Local College Access Networks. Using a collective impact framework, network partners assess community needs related to education, workforce development, and employment to strengthen systems and pathways in our community that promote educational attainment, upward mobility, and prosperity.

A cross-sector Leadership Team made up of community stakeholders from early childhood education, K-12 education, higher education, government, philanthropy, and business and nonprofit organizations guides the Network’s strategic direction and sets its goals, priority areas, and metrics. Each priority area is addressed through the work of an Action Team of community partners who work together to build capacity, coordinate efforts, and leverage additional support.

The Launch Manistee Network’s three current priority areas are described below.

Raising Manistee County

The Raising Manistee County (RMC) coalition was established to further develop and sustain a strong, coordinated, early childhood care and education system in Manistee County. RMC worked extensively to understand the community’s child care challenges and identify solutions through the development of a Community Solutions Action Plan (CSAP) (2023), supported by a Rural Child Care Innovation Program technical assistance grant from First Children’s Finance. Since then RMC has garnered additional financial support for implementing the CSAP through two Rural Readiness Grants from the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) and by establishing the Raising Manistee County Child Care Solutions Fund at the Manistee County Community Foundation. Further informed by the Regional Child Care Plan (Networks Northwest, 2024), RMC workgroups are actively working to strengthen the early childhood workforce, increase community education and investment in the early childhood system, make child care more accessible and affordable, and increase child care supply.

Postsecondary Access: Exploration and Planning

The Postsecondary Action Team was formed to strengthen pathways and systems that provide area high school students with meaningful career exploration and planning for education after high school to inspire students and prepare them to succeed in their chosen postsecondary path. The Team consists of K-12 school counselors, higher education professionals, and dedicated local agency partners that support area youth. Beyond working collaboratively around county-wide strategies, the Postsecondary Action Team has also developed a peer network to share best practices, tools, and resources.

Workforce Development and Education

The Launch Manistee Network recognizes that educational attainment is a strong predictor of economic success and that higher levels of education are generally associated with increased employment opportunities, higher earnings, and greater financial security. From its inception, the Launch Manistee Network has strived to include adult learners and engage employers to support workforce development and education, such as training, earning credentials, and supporting college access and completion. In alignment with the State of Michigan’s 60 by 30 Strategic Plan, the Network has been working to learn more about the local workforce development needs and opportunities. While building an Action Team around this priority is a work in progress, cross-sector partners are currently engaged in this work regionally, namely with the Northern Michigan Attainment Collaborative (NoMI). Network efforts continue to build stronger and more coordinated systems both locally and regionally in order to understand and meet the diverse needs of our community.
