Robert J. Carlon Scholarship Fund

The Robert J. Carlon Scholarship Fund was established to honor Robert J. Carlon, who worked at Bear Lake Schools from 1976 until his retirement in 1998.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria: Applicants must be graduating seniors of Bear Lake Schools. Selection is based on academic achievement, leadership qualities in the classroom and in extracurricular activities, and financial need.

Culbert Family Scholarship Fund

The Culbert Family Scholarship Fund was established by Tom and Lois Culbert to help encourage students to pursue the field of education, or a field that supports education, and to provide support for students looking to continue their education after high school. The scholarship also serves as a lasting memorial to Lois Culbert. Tom was a former superintendent for Manistee Area Public Schools and Tom and Lois's children share their value of education.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria: Applicants must be graduates or graduating seniors of Manistee Area Public Schools. Selection is based on financial need, academic achievement (GPA between 2.5 - 3.8), demonstration of leadership and involvement in serving youth or community.

Disabled American Veterans Salt City Chapter #43 Scholarship Fund

The Disabled American Veterans Salt City Chapter #43 Scholarship Fund honors members of the armed forces by providing scholarship support for the continuing education of U.S. military veterans and their descendants.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria: Applicant must be a veteran or the descendant of a veteran and a resident of Manistee County or graduate of a Manistee County school. Graduating seniors, non-traditional students, and college students that graduated from a Manistee County high school are eligible to apply. Applicants must plan to enroll full-time at any two or four-year accredited college, university, or vocational/technical school. Academic performance and financial need are also considerations. Preference may be given to applicants who were themselves disabled through their service, or who are the descendants of veterans who were disabled through their service. Preference may also be given to applicants/descendants of veterans who are members of a veterans organization (i.e.: DAV, Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion).

Cynthia Eble Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Cynthia Eble Memorial Scholarship Fund was established to honor Cindy Eble who enjoyed a career as a Dental Assistant for over 30 years and to encourage others to pursue a career in Dental Assisting.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria: Applicant must be a graduating senior of any Manistee County High School or a Manistee County resident who is pursuing a degree or certification in Dental Assisting. The applicant must have a high school GPA of 2.0 or higher, demonstrate financial need; and plan to enroll in a Dental Assisting degree or certificate program at an accredited college, university, or vocational/technical school. Selection will be based on meeting the above criteria, community involvement and narrative responses to essay questions in scholarship application.

Dr. Robert E. Fitch & Beverly J. Fitch Memorial Scholarship Fund

Recognizing the importance of education in opening doors for the future of Manistee Countys youth, the annual scholarship recognizes an Onekama High School student for outstanding athletic and academic achievement.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria: Applicant must be a graduating senior at Onekama High School and planning to attend a Michigan post-secondary institution. Additional requirements are: GPA of 3.0 or higher and athletic participation (must have lettered in at least one Varsity sport).

Gleason Memorial Scholarship Fund

William D. Gleason recognized the importance of continuing one's education after high school. This scholarship will provide support for Manistee area students.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria: Applicant must be a graduating senior at Manistee Area Public Schools, Manistee Catholic Central Schools, or CASMAN Academy and planning to pursue a degree or certification at any two or four-year accredited college, university, or vocational/technical school. The student must demonstrate financial need. Student achievement and leadership experience are also taken into consideration.

Karl and Irene Herrmann Family Scholarship Fund

The Karl and Irene Herrmann Family Scholarship Fund was established by the children of Karl and Irene Herrmann as a way to honor their parents and give back to the community.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria: Applicants must be Manistee County residents who are graduating seniors of any Manistee County high school; have a GPA of 3.0 or higher; demonstrate leadership ability and/or community involvement; and plan to pursue a degree or certification at any two or four-year accredited college, university, or vocational/technical school within the State of Michigan. The students academic achievement and financial need are also taken into consideration.

Howard L. Hughes and Patricia A. Hughes Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Howard L. Hughes and Patricia A. Hughes Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in loving memory of Howard and Patricia Hughes who were both professional educators before they retired and moved to Onekama, Michigan.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria: Applicants must be Manistee County residents who are graduating seniors of Onekama Consolidated Schools; have a GPA of 2.5 or higher (preference given to 3.0 or higher); and plan to pursue a degree or certification at any two or four-year accredited college, university, or vocational/technical school within the State of Michigan. Preference may be given to students pursuing a degree in the field of education but awards will not be limited to this field of study. Financial need is not a consideration.

Kaleva Community & Finnish Heritage Scholarship Fund

The Kaleva Community & Finnish Heritage Scholarship Fund encourages graduates of the Kaleva Norman Dickson school district to continue their education and rewards students who are actively involved in serving their community.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria: Applicant must be a graduating senior in the Kaleva Norman School District (KND) and must have completed their junior and senior years in KND; have a GPA of 2.5 or higher; and plan to enroll full-time at any two or four-year accredited college, university, or vocational/technical school. Selection is based on a one-page essay describing volunteer involvement in community and additional criteria including financial need, community involvement/volunteer service, academic performance, and leadership and achievement.

Applicants must also submit a one-page essay describing their volunteer involvement in their community to the Brethren High School Guidance Counselor by the March 1st deadline.

Minger Family Endowment Scholarship Fund

The Minger Family Endowment Scholarship Fund was established through the generosity of Forest R. Minger, Jr. through an estate gift to the Foundation. The Fund provides scholarship support to graduates or graduating seniors of any Manistee County High School and Manistee County residents.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria: Applicant must be a graduating senior of any Manistee County High School, a graduating senior at an Early/Middle College Program who originated in a Manistee County high school, a homeschooled student who resides in Manistee County or a Manistee County resident who is currently attending college or plans to attend college; have a GPA of 2.5 or higher with preference given to students having a GPA of 3.0 or higher; demonstrate financial need; and plan to enroll at any two or four-year accredited college, university, or vocational/technical school. Preference will be given to students who are pursuing specific fields of study including engineering, science, medical, or computer science, but awards will not be limited to these fields of study.

Ogilvie Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Ogilvie Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in fond memory of Doris Ogilvie, former freshman English teacher at Manistee Area Public Schools for more than twenty years. The scholarship also honors the memory of Doriss husband Gordon and their sons Scott and Gordie.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria: Applicant must be a graduating senior at Manistee High School; have a GPA of 3.0 or higher; and plan to enroll full-time at any two or four-year accredited college, university, or vocational/technical school. Selection is based in part on application essay and preference will be given to students demonstrating financial need.

Doug Schlaff Memorial Scholarship Fund

The Doug Schlaff Memorial Scholarship was established in loving memory of Doug Schlaff, former guidance counselor, teacher, and coach at Manistee High School. The scholarship recognizes Manistee High School students who demonstrate personal growth over the course of their high school career based on academic performance, maturity, and positive decision making. Students may be pursuing a degree or certification at any two or four year accredited college, university, or vocational/technical school. No scholarship application is used and all students who meet the above criteria shall be considered.

Elroy and Carol Urbanus Scholarship Fund

The Elroy Urbanus Scholarship Fund was established to honor the memory of Elroy Urbanus, a 45-year employee of Bear Lake Schools and dedicated member of the Bear Lake community. The fund also honors Carol Urbanus who graduated from Bear Lake Schools and was a teacher there for more than 30 years.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria: Applicants must be graduating seniors of Bear Lake Schools; pursuing any degree or certification at a two or four-year accredited college, university, or vocational/technical school; planning to enroll in a full-time course of study (12-15 credit hours or the equivalent); and have a minimum cumulative high school GPA of 2.5 or higher. Selections will be based on the above criteria, community involvement, responses to narrative questions in application, and demonstration of financial need.
